The Iditarod starts in Seward -as shown in the following sign it is the gateway.
there are lots of salmon trying to "get home to spawn". These are stopped by a gate that has to be opened to let them through. It is an area used for counting. What a great place to fish-if only it were legal.
this is the are they have to jump to get through the gate. They continue to jump even though it is closed and the fall back into the water.
The guys had to buy long boots to fish in the streams here. Remi is trying his hand at it.
It seem that everywhere you went there were people after the salmon.
a couple of views from our campground. Stoney Creek so named for the creek below.
This is the 2 1/2 mile tunnel that has traffic from both sides and a train sharing it. It is only one lane due to going through the mountain. You enter in the middle of the building and have to go at intervals set by a green/red light.
the line to take a turn at the tunnel, you may have to wait 20 minutes for a turn.
the tunnel seems to go on forever when you are in it. Sure would not want an earthquake-there are signs the alert you to falling rock in the tunnel.
out of the tunnel and you can see the train tracks we share it with.
This was a neat shot of the sun trying to come through the clouds. It is said in Seward that "they do not have sun, but the absence of clouds. They have about 15 or so days that are sunny all day.
Apparently the Northern Pike is a veracious eating machine.
The Seward run is the biggest event in Alaska. It is a run up this mountain by any who want to partake and is done on the 4th week end. They have a street fair an the run with people from all over coming to participate.
On of the many cruise ships that dock at Whittier. Looks like it is at the end of the road and you could "drive in" until you get closer as the road turns.
This reindeer ha velvet on its antlers that make it look soft to the touch.
Some glacial shots and one of the many glaciers with some flowers in the foreground.
The dock at Whittier with the cruise ship in the rear.
Interesting sign on the way to our campgrounds.
Some shots of waterfalls that make up the numerous lakes caused by the glaciers. They are melting everywhere (at least for a couple of months). This one is from the top of the mountain all the way down.
mid mountain there are large falls with considerable water coming down.
This one is above some oil tanks and appears to fill the one tank-sure would be nice if wate ran our vehicles.
