Glennallen to Valdez and things along the way.

This Indian statue is carved from an old tree stump.
We ran across this glacial lake with icebergs floating in it. 2/3 rds of an iceberg is under water.
The glacial lake is great for a mirror image.
A recipe for a glacier, enough ingredients and you can make one-oh yeah there is the problem of all those years it will take to make one.
The canyon we drove through to get to Valdez and the beauty beyond.
Click and make it larger to see the baby bald eagle in its nest. When young they do not have white heads.
This is the nest from the underside-they are very large nests.
Horsetail falls is across and just done the road from Bridal Vail falls that follows.
Bridal Vail falls, is very thunderous as you stand looking at it.

one of the great sights across the land.

a high meadow lake due to the glacial meltthis sign talks about the sphinx and why it stands after glaciers have decimated the rest of the land.
the sphinx can be seen in the distance
This building has a thatched roof. Combined with the log cabin wood makes it a neat looking building.

So have you ever wanted to be in a parade? You have plenty of opportunity in Alaska due to all the construction.
one of the high meadows through the mountains.
Bear country-you need to know how to act if you encounter one. click to enlarge and read for a chuckle.
The Worthington Glacier is one of several large ones on the way to and around Valdez.
The Matanuska Glacier is several miles long and very beautiful when the sun is on it.
Tidal flats are left when the glacial water goes out. These flats can be like quicksand for anyone ot any animal getting out on them.
the Alaska Pipeline as it snakes across the land toward Valdez.
So----where does the road go? Down quickly.
Everywhere you look there are waterfalls, this area has several in row.
Iron and Gypsum in the ground make for beautiful mountain colors. The Dahl sheep use the minerals like a salt lick.
Old Valdez -due to the 1964 EQ had to be moved-4 miles down the road/beach.
The pier as it still stands from the EQ in 1964.
all that is left of the town are a few foundations and intersections.
this is what the GPS maps show should have been where we were sitting.
a couple of the signs set as a tribute to the area and people. 31 from the town died due to the EQ.
