typical cell - later they had 2 people to a cell

Al Capone had it fairly easy while he was in compared to the rest of the inmates.

The prison was layed out like this so they could see from the hub down all hallways to see if there were any problems.

Eastern State Penitentiary was to be a model for all prisons of the time. This was a Quaker inspired system built in 1829. The inmates were to be in a cell by them selfs with no talking and only a bible to read. They were to reflect on what they had done "pentince" thus the word penitentiary. The typical sentance was for 2 years for things like horse theft and burglary.
