Columbia -old town & mining

This is the entrance to the Sutter Mine. We toured the mine in a shaft car. They are redoing the milling area and will continue to mine here for several years. Th mine shafts go under several of the surrounding cities.

This is a Jail in Columbia. There were no windows and only a small slide area that food could be passed through from the other room on the inside.

Some old wagons that "lay were they fell."

The Empire mine was one of the riches of the area. The owners lived in San Francisco and had this as one of their cottages. It is shown as a live museum.

This is the reflecting pond looking on the cottage. It currently is full of polliwogs in various stages of development.

This school has been used since it was built in 1872. This lady teaches school kids from the area that come for field trips. She has taught here for many years and lived in the area all her life.
This was a blacksmith shop that still runs to show how it is done. He was making courting candles when we were there. That is a spiral holder for the candle. A nail is put through the spiral into the candle. If the dad liked you it was put low and the candle burned to the nail, if he did not care for you as much he put the candle higher up for a shorter visit.

The cemetery in Columbia was moved to a new location when the largest gold nugget in the area was found while digging a grave. It caused a run on the cemetery when everyone staked a claim in it by the next morning.
