Some more Mount Vernon

Some of the buildings on the estate and the slave sleeping quarters.

a fort across from Mount Vernon and part of the view Washington had. in Honor of Washington the land was purchased and given to the state so it would remain undeveloped as when he was there.

the man on the roof of the flat section is redoing the walls to look like stone. Washington like the stone look and had them paint with a thick paint and throw sand into it while wet. It really did look like stone. Under the paint and sand was wood.

The Library of Congress
The artwork in the building is all symbolic. All ceilings are done with images reflecting specific fields. They show field and the main people of that field. All sides of the ceilings and each room are done differently. From the poets to the medical fields and all the sciences, they also reflect the seasons and the stars. For more information you can go to their website. They are working with Google to put a lot of the works housed there on the Internet to be used free by all who are interested.

Fort McHenry Maryland and other sites

unrolling & rolling the flag up is done with it streched out as the flag is never to touch the ground.

flag info re the size

sign regarding the big flag and history of flags double click to read sign

When Francis Scott Key saw the flag still flying when the air cleared he was inspired to write what is now our national anthem. He saw the flag from a distance of 8 miles away while on a ship. The flag is 40 x 32 and can be seen at a great distance. See the signs (double click and read them). The replica we unfurled is the size of the one flying on that morning. The battle lasted 25 hours and the British retreated.

Baltimore was successfully defended in the War of 1812 from Fort McHenry

due to the number and placement of the cannons they were able to hold off the British

note the size of the opening between Bill's hands. The cannon balls were 2o inches in diamiter and about 200 lbs

interesting museum and city statue in Baltimore

the above museum was called a Visionary Art Musuem. It reminds you of mosaic in glass as it is all pieces of cut glass of all colors. As is the Bird and the hangings in the tree.

this statue is called the City of the People and is two sided to show men and women.

lots to see in Washington, Maryland and Virginia

This was an intersting bus in our campground.
It was custom made in Bavaria and shipped here 2 yrs ago. A compny there called Rotel uses it for Germans to come and tour the country. The go for 2 wks at a time. This one is from Washington to Toronto Canada, then they go home. It runs all yr. when it is cold it goes south and to Mexico. The intent is to give them a flavor of what our country is like. The bus has seats and beds for 24. The beds are like a tube or similar to a tain bed. There is a room on the side for dressing. The other side opens for the kitchen. All are expected to help with the work. The director said she and the driver are on 24/7 until they return to Germany. She has been here 3 months this time and doing this type work for 7 yrs.
